SEARS
After Saturday Night Live mocked Jesus in a sketch on February 16, 2013, several customers requested that Sears discontinue advertising with the late-night show. In response, Sears almost immediately altered its advertising plans, and sent a “thank you” note to the American Family Association for bringing the matter to its attention.
Now it’s our turn to do Sears a favor. The struggling retailer has closed hundreds of locations in recent years, and its shares have plummeted. Sales in appliances and tools have been identified as a particular area of weakness. Therefore, the next time you shop for a new appliance or purchase a gift for your “special handyman,” take your buying power to Sears.
IN-N-OUT BURGER
A privately held corporation, In-N-Out Burger is completely owned by devout Christians (the Snyder family). With every sip and yummy bite, you get a Bible verse. Scripture references are printed discreetly on each container and wrapper. You’ll find “Revelation 3:20” on the burger wrappers; “John 3:16” on the soft drink cups; “Proverbs 24:16” on the fry boat; “Proverbs 3:5” on the milkshake cups; and “Nahum 1:7” on the Double-Double wrapper (double meat and double cheese). Company spokesman Carl Van Fleet told USA Today that the founders' son, Richard Snyder, instituted the practice. “He told me, ‘It's just something I want to do.’”
In-N-Out Burger has been ranked “the best” in several customer satisfaction surveys, and its standard of excellence doesn’t stop there. The company pays its employees significantly more than state and federally mandated minimums. As of April 2013, the chain’s employees start at $10.50 per hour. In addition, managers can earn up to $120,000 per year. Plus, all employees (full-time and part-time) enjoy vision, medical, and dental benefits. Well, Carl Van Fleet, supporting this Christian company is “just something that we want to do!”
