The Seen and Unseen

When visitors are coming over, some people clean only surfaces, shove items under the couch, and stuff things in random closets and drawers. While that approach might impress “the Jones,” it won’t de- clutter your spirit. “Check every drawer, shelf, and closet,” advises Ehman. “Put back the out of place items, return the things that don’t belong to you, throw out the trash, and give away items that you don’t want, use, or need.” When it comes to clearing out clutter, Ehman’s counsel shouldn’t only be applied to our homes. We should “put back” the respect, love, and honesty in our relationships – “return” our worry lists, fears, and insecurities to God – “give away” positions and responsibilities that lead to unnecessary stress – and “throw out” toxic thoughts and habits. Delve deep! Bring order to every area, even the places that only you and God can see.

Stick to the Plan
The Bible has a stern message for those who like to make a mess after they clean up: “As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats [his or her] foolishness” (Proverbs 26:11, New Living Translation). Pretty gross, huh? But the proverb is true. Why spend days, weeks, or months organizing your life, if you’re going to clutter it again? Once you’ve de-cluttered, you must hold fast. “Don’t return to your unhealthy patterns of junk collecting,” shares Ehman. Plus, living a clutter-free life is a daily task. Each day, you’ll have to sweep, straighten, and dust your relationships, emotions, finances, and home. Don’t let the junk pile up again. Tidy up every day, and stick to your plan.  c
