Many of us have privately asked:
"Why can’t I have a more consistent love walk?"
"Why do I keep struggling with being offended, annoyed, and frustrated by people?"
The Word of God teaches that even though we love the Lord, loving other people requires work – and a lot of it! In fact, Colossians 3:14 instructs that we must "put on love" (New International Version). This means that loving people won’t always come naturally to us. It will sometimes require deliberate effort and spiritual discipline.
The Message Bible puts it this way: “Dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered [...] quick to forgive an offense [...]. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it" (Colossians 3:12-14).
Love is a choice. It is something that we must choose to dress in every day, every minute, and every second of our lives. For many of us, it will never come easily – but we can choose to “put it on” anyway.
